NASHVILLE, Tenn. – July 1, 2013 – One in eight Nashville adults can’t read. These adults can’t help their kids with homework, read bills, or complete job applications. With your help, the Nashville Adult Literacy Council (NALC) is working to change that.
NALC provides tutor training for those interested in helping change the life of an adult learner by volunteering their time. Whether you can give a few hours each week or an hour each month, you can make a difference.
The One-on-One Program is for volunteers who can commit to tutoring two or three hours each week for six months. Training is scheduled for 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., Saturday, July 20, and 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., Friday, August 16. Each One-on-One training will be conducted at NALC’s West Nashville Office, 4805 Park Ave., 37209.
The Start Now Program offers volunteers the flexibility to sign up for one-hour tutoring appointments as their schedules permit. Training is scheduled for 6 – 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 17, at the West Nashville Office, 4805 Park Ave., 37209, and 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday, August 20, at the Antioch Office, 325 Rural Hill Road #2, 37217.
Since 1982, the Nashville Adult Literacy Council has been teaching reading to U.S.-born adults and English to adult immigrants. Annually, they serve more than 1,500 learners, work with more than 500 volunteer tutors, and conduct more than 30 classes throughout the community.
