Activities in the Middle Tennessee celebrating the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. 

SATURDAY January 18, 2014

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity MLK Scholarship Ball- 6:30 p.m. reception and dinner dance begins at 7:30 p.m. Hosted by the Kappa Zeta Lambda chapter in Cole Park Commons in Fort Campbell, Ky. The cost is $30 per person. For information, call Jason Tate, 931-338-0640.

“Diversity in Islam: A Fulfillment of Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream”- 11 a.m. Saturday at the Islamic Center of Nashville, 2515 12th Ave. S. Guest speaker is Amiri Alhadid, chairman of Tennessee State University’s department of Africana studies. The event also features displays representing various countries, cultures. The event is free and open to the public.

Martin Luther King Jr. Service Fair- 1:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Northwest Family YMCA , 3700 Ashland City Highway. The Y is sponsoring the event in partnership with Hands On Nashville. Children will participate in small service projects for area nonprofits. For more information, call 242-6559.

Clarksville branch of the NAACP - Voter registration and membership drive – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Sponsored by the Clarksville branch of the NAACP at Wal-Mart supercenters in St. Bethlehem and Sango.

Unity breakfast- The C.E. McGruder Unity Breakfast will take place at Jefferson Street Missionary Baptist Church, 2708 Jefferson St. The guest speaker will be the Rev. James Lawson, a leading theoretician and tactician of nonviolence within Civil Rights Movement.

Scholarship banquet- The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. at 7 p.m. at Tennessee State University’s Kean Hall. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Dr. William F. Buchanan, pastor of Fifteenth Avenue Baptist Church in Nashville.

Clarksville’s at First Missionary Baptist Church – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration - 4 p.m. Sunday at Clarksville’s at First Missionary Baptist Church, 301 Fairview Lane.

Schermerhorn Symphony Center

The Let Freedom Sing concert 7 p.m. Sunday. Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Schermerhorn Symphony Center, One Symphony Place. For information about ticketing or late seating passes, call 687-6400.

Gordon United Methodist Church

Worship service - Civil rights leader the Rev. James M. Lawson, Jr., preaches at 4 p.m. Sunday at Gordon United Methodist Church, 2334 Herman St.

Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, 

M.L. King, Jr. Memorial Worship Service – 3 p.m. Sunday at Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, 819 33rd Ave. N. Members of a predominantly black and a predominantly white congregation attend service focusing on King’s life and legacy.

Annual Community MLK Holiday Celebration - 9-11 a.m. Monday at Fifth Ward Missionary Baptist Church, 900 Franklin St. Feature educational workshops and panel discussion and seminar focusing on community concerns and issues.

Commemorative March in Clarksville

Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative March in Clarksville - noon Monday beginning in the parking lot of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, corner of Main Street and University Drive.

 

A Day of Unity 

A Day of Unity – 10 a.m. Monday at Jefferson Street Missionary Baptist Church, 2708 Jefferson St. Participants will then head to march Gentry Center at Tennessee State University.

Annual commemorative Martin Luther King Day march Monday in Nashville in Jefferson Street corridor, Tennessee State University area – various gathering sites including American Baptist College, Bethel AME Church, and the Metro Police North Precinct and Meharry Medical Center and Jefferson Street Missionary Baptist Church. Participants at morning programs will walk to the official starting point, which is at 28th Avenue North and Jefferson Street. The march starts at 11 a.m. and ends with a convocation at the Howard C. Gentry Center at Tennessee State University.

Flynn Auditorium of Vanderbilt University Law School

Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture by Rita Sanders Geier – 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Flynn Auditorium of Vanderbilt University Law School, 131 21st Ave. S. Geier is a Vanderbilt Law alumna and Social Security Administration attorney who spearheaded the desegregation litigation in Tennessee. A recent settlement designated $40 million to Tennessee State University.

James K. Polk Theater of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center

 

God’s Trombones – 7 p.m. Monday in the James K. Polk Theater of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, 505 Deaderick St., Nashville. Produced by Amun Ra Theatre, the play features former Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George, Lisa Arrindell Anderson, Jeff Obafemi Carr, Bobby Daniels, Marlon Styles, Sherre Miller Bishop and Robert Fitzgerald II. Tickets $25, $50, and $75.

Benton Chapel at Vanderbilt University

Bishop Joseph Warren Walker III, senior pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church, will be the keynote speaker at event 6:30 p.m. in Benton Chapel at Vanderbilt University. The Fisk Jubilee singers will perform prior to his talk and a candlelight vigil will follow his remarks. The event is part of the university’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Series, which ends Jan. 30.

“The African-American Spiritual: The Heart of the Slave Community”- 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Belmont University’s Massey Concert Hall. Features faculty members in the music department at Auburn University discussing the role of African-American spirituals before and after the Civil War.

Vanderbilt’s Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center.

 

Meeting of the Martin Luther King Ministry Forum – 6 p.m. Thursday at Vanderbilt’s Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center. Organized by Vanderbilt Divinity School’s Black Seminarians “Prophetic Spirituality for Social Justice Ministry” will feature pastors, religious scholars and social activists.

Sarratt Gallery at Vanderbilt University

Harold Lowe Civil Rights Photograph Collection – Monday through, Thursday, Feb. 15 in Sarratt Gallery at Vanderbilt University. The gallery is located in the main lobby of the Sarratt Student Center. Complimentary parking for Sarratt Student Center events is available on weekends and after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays in the garage at 25th Ave. South and Highland Avenue.
