Nashville, Tennessee—-Legendary Hammond B-3 Organist Dr. Lonnie Smith returns to Nashville, Tennessee in concert on Friday, April 5th, 2013 at Payne Chapel Church (212 Neill Ave) at 7:30 p.m. with proceeds to benefit Daniel Payne Outreach Ministries’ The Living Breadbox, an emergency relief food pantry for area families, and The ASK-PEP Program, an initiative that promotes civility among under- represented youth in cooperation with Metro Nashville Police and Juvenile Justice Systems.
The concert on April 5th, will be Dr. Smith’s first live appearance in Nashville in six years. Since then, Dr. Lonnie has topped both the Jazz Journalist Association and Downbeat Critics and Readers polls as “#1 Jazz Organist”. In 2012, The Good Doctor turned 70 and founded his own record label, Pilgrimage Productions, releasing a live trio CD, “The Healer”. The disc received enthusiastic reviews in such publications as The Wall Street Journal, All About Jazz and Downbeat Magazine while reaching Number One on the CMJ Jazz Radio Charts. On the forthcoming disc, “In The Beginning” (summer 2013), Dr. Lonnie revisits his tunes originally composed and recorded during the 1960s alongside peers such as Lee Morgan, David “Fathead” Newman, George Benson, Melvin Sparks and Idris Muhammad.
Your support and attendance on April 5th helps to ensure the continuation of two of east Nashville’s leading community-based family initiatives sponsored by Daniel Payne Outreach Ministries.
As The ASK-PEP(Alcohol Screening and Knowledge-Parents Educating Parents) Program has been placed on the State of Tennessee’s “Historic Community Initiatives” list for its 20 year effort in reducing youth delinquency in cooperation with Metro Nashville’s Police and Juvenile Justice System, it has fallen victim to the latest round of statewide budget cuts and must locate additional funding.
Likewise, The Living Breadbox served over 10,000 meals in 2011 to Nashville area families in need of emergency food assistance. Additionally, in collaboration with Payne Chapel Church’s Florence Grady Missionary Society, 370 area families received Thanksgiving meals (complete with a Turkey, sides and dessert) in November 2012 during The Breadbox’s annual Thanksgiving food distribution.
Daniel Payne Outreach Ministries is dedicated to ensuring that both of these initiatives continue and solicits the support of them. Purchase tickets ($22) at brownpapertickets.com or contact Daniel Payne Ministries at 615-262-3675. Find out more about Dr. Lonnie Smith at www.drlonniesmith.com
