Brothers Unite To Feed the City

In John 21:17, Jesus asked Peter if he loved Him. Peter of course said yes. To prove it Jesus told him to feed His flock. This Saturday a group of men in Nashville called Brothers United will be doing some “Flock Feeding” at Cedar Lake Park in the Madison section of Davidson County. The event called Feed The City will start at 2:00 p.m. at Cedar Lake’s Section Four shelter. Brothers United was started a few years ago by Bordeaux Eagle Youth Football Coach Ian Phillips, Lamont Patron, Lemicah Ross, Andre Lewis and Phillips’ brother Darius Barnes. Every year they come together to feed people and have a good time. Over the years their friends “Rod”, “J-Mo”, Brian Torain, Anthony Burkeen, Anthony Kennedy, “Vortex Beat Street” and Terry Kelly have joined them to make the event a huge production.

“We want people to come out, enjoy themselves and eat,” said Phillips on WTNTribune Radio’s Bench Press. “We are feeding people for free. Everybody thinks it’s a catch. There is no catch to it. We are committed to this and will be out there until we run out of food. Listen, we have so much food that I will have to start prepping it on Wednesday. “

This event will also be kid friendly as it will have bounce houses, games and treats for the youth. Brothers United hopes this will raise awareness that a group of African-American men can work together on a positive issue and give back to a community that has supported them over the years. There will be music, dancing. Politicians, business people and professional athletes have been invited to come.

“This community has done so much for me, I feel it is my duty to do this,” said Phillips. For me it’s about giving back. We all love this city; it’s just the kind of people we are. My little brother came to me and asked if I would grill. I love doing it so the answer was yes. Now it has grown to this level. All we want is for people to come out and enjoy a Saturday afternoon. Since its Mother’s Day Weekend, stop by and bring mom with you.”

The event is free and open to the public. For more details contact Ian Phillips at (615) 568-7811.

Barnett Grabs Venom Player of the Game

NASHVILLE- Nashville Venom Wide Receiver Phillip Barnett won the WTNTribune Radio Sports Venom Injection Player of the Week for his efforts in the Venom’s 49-42 defeat at the hands of the Georgia Fire. Barnett caught eight passes for 94 yards and four touchdowns in his best game stats-wise thus far this year.

“It felt good to win this award and I appreciate it but I would rather we won the game,” said Barnett while being interviewed on Venom Interjection. “With George (Murray) playing quarterback for the first time this year, the coaches asked the receivers to step up for him. I took it as a challenge and was glad the ball was coming my way. We started slow so I hope we can get it going early this week.”

The Venom will get a chance to redeem themselves as they will take on the Fire this Saturday. This time the game will be at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. They also will have one more week of practice with newly acquired quarterback Lee Chappell. Venom Head Coach Billy Back is licking his chops at another chance at the Fire.

“As I was looking at the stats what Phillip did jumped out at me,” said Back on the Venom Interjection Show. “He was about the only guy that played up to our expectation. We were sluggish and listless and you can’t do that and win in this league. From me on down we will have to do better. I am looking for our receivers to have a much better week with a week of practice with Lee. Having Lee playing will give George a chance to go back to receiver. Phillip made some great catches and two were taken away from him. I promise you that we will be more prepared this week. I don’t like losing and neither do any of our guys. If you can’t get motivated to play this week then you may need to figure out something else to do.”

On the season Barnett has 25 catches for 248 yards and eight touchdowns. The eight touchdowns place him tied for second in the Professional Indoor Football League. His four touchdowns in the game tied him with teammate Jordan Jolly for most in the game for the Venom.

High School All Star Game to Celebrate Fatherhood

On June 14, 2014, The Wallace Family Foundation will host the first annual Scott C. Wallace All Star Weekend. The basketball games will feature unsigned high school girls and boys seniors in the Davidson County area. The event will take place at Maplewood High School and the doors will open at 1:00 p.m. College recruiters and coaches from across the nation will be in attendance as this event is a sort of last ditch effort for graduating seniors to showcase their talents.

“Helping students get to college has been a dream of my husband’s for years,” said Wallace Foundation CEO Harriet Vaughan-Wallace. “The family started the foundation as a Father’s Day gift to him a few years ago. Since then we have been planning to do this as sort of a kick off for it. Scott does a lot of hard work for students that may not get the recognition or exposure from the mainstream media. What is exciting is that no one has said no to us when asked for help with this. We have some extremely distinguished and respected community members on the committee. For us, this is exciting.”

The NFL Alumni Association Chapter of Tennessee led by president and former Tennessee Titan Al Smith is on board. Also, The FANS Inc. and it’s executive director Mark North. Program Manager Robert Taylor of the New Life Fatherhood Program has agreed to sponsor. Former Fisk University basketball coaches Jay Smith and Tony Thompson have agreed to help. A strong contingent from Metropolitan Nashville Public School are helping all including coaches; Ty Wilson, Arcentae Broome and Eric Townsend from Maplewood, Coach Raymond Pratcher of Pearl-Cohn, Coach Avery Patton of East Nashville and MNPS employee Kina Cleveland. Tennessee State University students Michael Curtis and Alicia Bailey and East Nashville basketball mothers Vanessa Scott and Princess Washington have also agreed to be on the committee. Scott’s son Christian was the first to announce he would participate.

“Having my family in this has been extremely special to me,” said Scott Wallace. We also have key people in place to make this a success. When I look at the names of the committee I am humbled. They all have said that they are excited about it. My wife and I believe in leaving a legacy. To have my nephew (Walter Wallace III) design the logos and my son JaQuan to manage and construct the website makes this even better for me. Then to have Mike and Alicia willing to lend their support as students is rewarding to me. Chris Scott agreeing to play is a key. He is the type of player that gets overlooked. He excels in three sports. He will be able to show off his athletic ability. A recruiter may go back to their school and talk to their football or track coach about players like that.”
