The Nashville Chapter of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. (NHBW, Inc.) in collaboration with The Dream Centers of TN will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony designating a Reading Corner on Thursday, May 22, at 3:30 p.m., at the Hamilton United Methodist Church at 3105 Hamilton Church Road, Antioch, TN, 37013.

The NHBW in collaboration with The Dream Centers of TN also held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony designating a Reading Corner at the Celebrate Life Community Church, 801 East Old Hickory Boulevard, Madison, TN, 37115, in February. The NHBW also has a Reading Corner for Seniors at Fifty Forward in Bordeaux and a Reading Room for children at the Kelley Miller Smith Against Abusive Behavior Center at the Ennix-Jones Center, 460 10th Circle North, (Behind First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill), Nashville, TN, 37203.

The NHBW’s literacy initiative is a grassroots movement established to help raise reading levels for students across the country. Their motto is to “Read, swap and keep books!” The NHBW has plans to roll out 4 more Reading Rooms or corners within the next few months. The NHBW gave away 776 books at their “Literacy Day in the Park” at Hadley Park during the African Street Festival sponsored by the African-American Cultural Alliance. They collected and distributed over 2,100 books in 2013 and plan to surpass that number this year.

To date, over 4,000 books have been given to children to assist them in learning to read.

To donate books or to make a donation to the NHBW Reading for Life Program, please contact Rep. Brenda Gilmore, President at Brenda.Gilmore@comcast.net.
