MAPLEWOOD, TN.- The Scott & Harriet Wallace Family Foundation put on their inaugural Scott C. Wallace All Star Weekend event this past Saturday at Maplewood High School located on the east side of Maplewood.

The event’s purpose was intended for allowing some of the top athletes in the area that went unnoticed by college recruiters to showcase their talents in basketball, a three point shooting contest and dunk contest. Twelve colleges from around the country from as far south as Alabama and north as Indiana were represented at the game. Because the NCAA is in their dead period, scouts from schools like Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt and Belmont could not attend.

“Our goal was to get these players looks from smaller schools with smaller budgets,” said Co-Chairperson Scott Wallace.” All the schools present were glad to be able to see the talent on the floor. Plus this is a fundraiser to raise money for two deserving Metro students to receive scholarships. We had some hiccups but all in all I would call this a success.”

High School Stars Defeats College Stars

The event started with the ladies taking the court. Eight recently graduated seniors coached by General Sessions Judge Rachel Bell defeated a group of former Metro players coached by Hillwood Assistant Principal Chierelle Hughes-Jefferson, 55-48. Judge Bell’s team was relentless in the first half taking a 30-14 lead. Hunters Lane’s DeMicia Munsey had nine points with Maplewood’s Terra’Lexus Roberts and Whites Creek’s Ashyla Stanberry scoring eight apiece. In the second half both teams turned it up a notch. Former Overton star Rashida Ademosu scored all of her game high 17 points in the half to spark a furious comeback for Hughes-Jefferson’s team. They closed the gap to two with 5:33 left on free throws by former Maplewood star and current Walters State player Tangela Crenshaw (10 points, 10 rebounds). But Judge Bell’s team was able to stem the tide as Roberts (14 points) and Stanberry (13 points) hit key three pointers down the stretch to seal the deal. Roberts was then voted the game’s Most Valuable Player.

“Mr. Wallace shared with me the roster from the other team and I got hyped up,” said Roberts. Those ladies I have heard and read about and I knew we had to play well to beat them. It was an honor to win the game and then to get the MVP. I had fun coming back to my old gym. There are a lot of memories here.”

West Boys Stars Route North Stars

The boy’s game was exciting from start to finish as the West Team coached by East Assistant Coach Avery Patton defeated the North Team coached by former Fisk Men’s Coach Jay Smith 104-89. Both teams had some good natured trash talking throughout. Maplewood graduate Donald Clendening (16 points) felt right at home at the gym he used to play his home games in, as he drove through the lane, dunked and was fouled. The game stopped as the crowd rose to their feet and Clendening flexed his muscles.

“I had a lot of fun out there,” said Clendening whose nickname is Woo. “Every time Mr. Wallace announces me I get hyped. He holds that Wooooooooo for a long time. I appreciate him for asking me to play. He has done a lot for guys like me that are trying to play somewhere. My hole is I will be able to latch on with a school. I want to do better in my life and I am ready to take the next step.”

Stratford’s Tyquez Itiat took home the MVP honors scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
