By McKinley Young Jr.

Correspondent WTNTribune Radio Sports

NASHVILLE, TN- The Overton Bobcats (5-3 Overall, 5-1 Metro, 5-1 District 12AAA) was on a mission in their last regular season home game. They helped their seniors go out in style, as they beat the McGavock Raiders (7-2, 4-2, 4-2) 35-21 in a very entertaining contest. The WTNTribune Radio Sports Game of the Week didn’t disappoint any of the fans, as both teams fought until the end. The game had plenty of talent on both sides of the ball and had flashes of both offenses showing the ability to score quickly.

The Bobcats seniors played a huge role in the win but got help from their underclassmen. Junior QB Julius King provided a spark to get the scoring started as he hit fellow classmate Elijah Pankey on a 35 yard strike to give the Overton a 7-0 lead. McGavock came right back as junior RB Kendell Johnson scored on a 10 yard run. The score was set up by a 75 yard run from QB Demontez Carlton. Eighteen seconds later, Bobcats senior RB Nick Fuqua went 73 yards and put Overton back in front 14-7. Johnson then scored again, this time from nine yards out at the end of the quarter to tie the game up at 14. King hit back to work hitting Josh Stackhouse on a 27 yard pass in the second quarter to give Overton a 21-14 halftime lead.

“Our guys played hard and never took our foot off the pedal,” said Overton Head Coach Steve Williams. “We still have a chance to position ourselves in a great spot to make a strong run in the playoffs”.

The second half was all Bobcats as Ole Miss Commit senior Ugo Amadi scored two touchdowns. First he grabbed a 24 yard reception from King. Then he scored on a 10 yard run to account for the Bobcats two scores of the second half. The Bobcats controlled the game by giving the ball to Fuqua all night as he ended up with 217 yards on 29 carries and a touchdown. Amadi accounted for 105 total yards and also had an interception at the goal line to stop a McGavock drive at the end of the first half. King ended his night going 6 of 8 for 113 yards passing and three touchdown. Both Amadi and Fuqua were named WTNTribune Radio Sports Players of the Game.

“I give all the credit to my offensive linemen and coaches for having faith in me to and letting me grind out a win for us,” says Fuqua who gained over 2100 yards last season for Cane Ridge High School.

Both teams look to get wins next week to help with their playoff positioning. Overton plays #8 Antioch on the road next week, while McGavock will look to bounce back at home against #6 Cane Ridge.

Pearl-Cohn looks to finish strong against rival Maplewood.

This is one of the best rivalries Metro has to offer. These two schools have a long history of not liking each other and having great games. Pearl-Cohn beat Maplewood twice last season once in the regular season by a score of 59-37 and in the first round of the playoffs 30-14. So needless to say Maplewood will be looking for revenge this Thursday.

Maplewood looks to even their record for the season.

Maplewood looks to even their record for the season.

With this being the last game in this rivalry for seniors RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn, LB Josh Montgomery, LB Koreyon Jordan of Pearl-Cohn and WR Antwon Edmondson, RB Daronta Nelson, LB Juantarius Bryant of Maplewood this should be one of the better games we’ve seen this year.

Maplewood senior Juantarius Bryant looks to keep the Panthers’ hopes of a playoff berth alive. Bryant is second in the state in tackles behind teammate Gage Smith.
