Five players score in double figures in blowout win
DYERSBURG, Tenn. – With a huge game looming against the top team in the conference on Saturday it is easy to get caught in a trap game. Add in a midweek three hour drive and you have a chance to not be focused. The Columbia State Community College Chargers (19-5, 11-3) didn’t allow that adversity to bother them as they ran out to a 22 point halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way in their 97-73 victory at Dyersburg State (6-14, 3-11).
“We came out focused from the beginning of the game,” said Charger Head Coach Brian “Penny” Collins.
“We made a statement early. Whenever we can jump out to a lead like that is gives u a nice little cushion, we were able to ride that into the second half.
The Chargers were led by Jamontae Davis (Hillsboro H.S.) with 19 points. Four other Chargers, T.J. Cromer (17 points), Immanuel Griggs (14 points), T.J. Dunans (13 points) and Justin Pride (10 points) joined Davis in double figures. Griggs and Dunans grabbed 11 rebounds and Pride had 11 assists. The three earned double-doubles. Collins was happy with their effort. After the game, he singled out the importance of Davis having a good night.
“Those guys just played efficient basketball tonight,” added Collins. “They all played hard in spurts then the next guy behind them was able to pick them up. I am excited to see Jamontae Davis come along. We are just starting to see the greatness of him as well. We are glad to see him progressing. He played like a man tonight.”
On defense, Pride held the conference’s leading scorer Virgil Davidson to nine points. Davis especially was spectacular at both ends of the floor adding three blocks to his all around great night. His focus and attention to detail has been a plus for the Chargers lately. Now that this game is over, Davis and his teammates can now focus on top ranked Southwest Tennessee State.
“My focus was the same as every night; I just tried to put more focus on making shots and just trying to do all I can for my team. If we play hard we can beat anybody we play against,” Davis said.
The victory gave the Chargers the most wins in the conference with 11. They still find themselves in third place because they have played more games than Southwest and Motlow State. They still have one a game each against both teams. Chattanooga State being a game behind Columbia State will make an interesting last three weeks of the regular season.
