WTNTribune Sports Gives Names to Annual Metro Awards
This year the WTNTribune Sports Radio team announced it will recognize three former and two current Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools contributors.
The Metro Coach of the Year is named after current Stratford Head Football Coach Maurice Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald won two straight state championships with as head coach of Pearl-Cohn High School.
The Assistant Coach’s award is named the Dorris Armstrong Award. Armstrong was a long time assistant coach at multiple Metro Schools.
The Metro Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Lester McClain. McClain starred at the University of Tennessee and was the first African-American to play in a Southeastern Conference game.
The Offensive Player of the Year is named after former Whites Creek High School star Jamie Graham. Graham is a current assistant basketball coach at Hillsboro High School.
The Defensive Coach of the Year is named after former Pearl-Cohn High School lineman John Henderson. Henderson was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars and has recently retired from the NFL.
The Metro Freshman of the Year Award is named after Phellepe Hall. Hall starred at Maplewood High School and recently passed away.
