Phillips, Amadi Make College Choices

Two WTNTribune Radio Sports All Metro First Team Defensive players chose Southeastern Conference schools to further their education. Hlllsboro High School defensive end Kyle Phillips committed to the University of Tennessee this past Saturday on national television during the 2015 Army All American Bowl. Phillips along with Maplewood’s Gage Smith was named the WTNTribune Radio Sports John Henderson co-Metro Defensive Players of the Year.

Phillips, the son of Tennessee State University Athletic Director Theresa Phillips helped to lead his team to the Tennessee Scholars Athletic Association Class 5A State Final game. Phillips is rated the top defensive lineman in the state of Tennessee and the eighth ranked defensive end in the country. Phillips joins teammate Vincent Perry who committed to Tennessee during the season. He also played well in the All American game recording a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss.

“I just felt at home at Tennessee,” said Phillips while being interviewed at the All American game. “I loved it since I’d been there. My family enjoyed it. It’s perfect for my family and me, so that’s why I picked Tennessee. Vincent has been on me to join him. Having him with me will be fun. I think I got a boost of confidence coming in here and performing pretty well against the best players in the country. That just gave me the boost I need moving forward. Sky’s the limit.”

Overton High School Ugo Amadi committed to Louisiana State University after rescinding his commitment to Ole Miss. Amadi, the WTNTribune Radio Sports Lester McClain Scholar-Athlete of the Year, helped to lead his team to the second round of the 5A playoffs. The four star athlete wasn’t challenged much this season playing cornerback, but he did end up with 25 tackles and two interceptions.
