ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky.-The Columbia State Community College Chargers (12-4) went on a 34-0 run midway through the first half and cruised the rest of the way as they defeated the Elizabethtown Community College Barons 113-62 in non-conference action in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. The run was keyed by unselfish play and stifling defense. Down 22-16 with 13:21 to go in the first half after a hot start by Baron guard Javon Cotton (17 points), the Chargers went to work. During the run the Chargers assisted on 14 of 15 made baskets. They ended up scoring a season high 68 points in the half.
“We shared the ball better than I have seen since I started coaching here,” said Charger Head Coach Brian Collins. “24 assists out of 27 baskets in the first half is really getting it done. I was really happy with our defense. 2015 is a new year and we are ready to make a run.”
In only his second game of the season since coming back from a meniscus injury, sophomore Matt Brown (Cane Ridge High School) looked like he is ready to be a force inside and out. He keyed the start of the run by hitting two three-point shots in a row leading to him scoring 14 points. Brown also had six rebounds. Five other Chargers scored in double figures led by T.J. Cromer’s 24 points. Freshman post Immanuel Griggs added 17 points and seven rebounds. All American T.J. Dunans once again filled up the stat book recording a triple-double (16 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists). Jamonte Graham and A.J.Dodd scored 12 points apiece. Justin Pride dished out 12 assists.
“It felt good to get out there to help my team out,” said Brown. “Coach has been getting on us about keeping the pressure on. We like being able to get in transition. That run we had was all about our defense.”
The Chargers will be back in action at home this Monday versus Martin Methodist. Game time is 7 p.m.
